Description:
The course considers the influence of the media on the ontology and anthropology of man in today's information society as a "spectacle society".
This applies to both "classic" media (newspapers, radio and television) and the Internet as a new medium.
The media as carrier of messages and the produced hand of man create an image of historical notes and ethical values which, under the influence of media owners and the global influence of science and technology, change today's society and become the main driver of (re) shaping the world.
In this sense, it is important to consider the current influences and power of modern media on the creation of social processes.
Through the course students will be introduced to various media theories, mediology and philosophy of media (Harold Innis, Marshall McLuhan Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer, Regis Debray, Gunther Anders, Guy Debord, Jean Baudrillard, etc.)

Learning outcomes at the level of the programme to which the course contributes:
ability to understand and interpret the way of origin, meaning and application of certain sociological theories
knowledge and understanding of the basic determinants of sociological thinking
knowledge and understanding of the field of economic, cultural and political social processes, prevailing social values, current forms of social action and the way of functioning and constitution of various forms of sociality
knowledge and understanding of basic theoretical approaches in sociology
skills of written and oral reporting and public presentation of content
ability to act effectively, independently and in a team, and to present the results of work orally and in writing
the ability to present the results to the research of certain social phenomena and problems for the professional and general public
the ability to effectively use various methods of communicating with society as a whole

Expected learning outcomes at the level of the course:
ability to understand and interpret the way of origin, meaning and application of certain theories
define basic terminology, key concepts of mediology
critically consider the role and importance of media propaganda
taking a stand towards the theoretical and practical segments of media issues
acquiring knowledge for the world of multimedia communication
the ability to effectively use various methods of communicating with society as a whole
ability of ethical understanding and implementation of professional ethics
independent analysis of media manipulation and media seduction
independent monitoring of changes in the media

Course content:
1. Introductory lecture - introduction to syllabus, course goals, way of working on lectures and seminars and rules for evaluating student work
2. Introduction to communication-media theories - defining basic terminology, problem motives and key concepts
3. Professional reporting standards - coding and decoding of media text, selection of events worthy of media attention
4. The social role of the media and the influence of the media on social groups and individuals, censorship and self-censorship, fake news
5. Digital McLuhan - a global village, hot and cold media
6. Mediology - Regis Debray
7. Mechanical reproduction - Walter Benjamin
8. Media Theory - Harold Innis
9. Society of Spectacle - Guy Debord
10. Simulation and reality - Jean Baudrillard
11. The impact of telecommunications on perception - Paul Virilio and the virtual image
12. The social context of radio and television - the world as a phantom and the matrix - Gunther Anders
13. Ethics of production and consumption of news in modern society - journalistic code of honor, examples of unethical behavior in public space
14. Social context and violence in the media "The mean world syndrom" - George Gerbner, theory of cultivation
15. Concluding remarks - evaluation of achievements in the case.
